Welcome to fourth quarter. Time flies when you are having fun : ) We have many exciting activities coming up in the next few weeks. On April 9th we will be Skyping with Jane Goodall. We went to see the play of her life in Durham so this will be an awesome opportunity to hear from her. We will also have an in-house field trip with the Science is Fun crew on April 23rd once we return from spring break. Spring pictures will be April 25th and April 27tth will be our awesome Spring Carnival.
Thank you to those parents that attended their child’s student led conference. They were all so excited to showcase their work and experience in third grade. If you were unable to attend one of the sessions listed on my sign up, please let me know and we will try to schedule a time for you.
EOGs are currently scheduled for May 29th and 30th. Please try not to schedule any appointments during the school day on those days. I will send out some released EOG questions closer to the time of the test. For now, the best thing you can do to prepare your student for this test is to make sure they are reading every night. Having conversations with him/her about what they are reading is helpful as well. In math, continued practice with the four mathematical operations to improve fluency would also be beneficial.
In language arts, we have started our fourth and final module. Our focus this quarter will be a nonfiction unit on the importance of fresh water on Earth. We will spend a great deal of time working to find the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction articles. We will also be working on identifying different parts of speech and using context clues to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words.
In math, we have started our unit on customary measurement. We are discussing inches, feet and yards, we will then move to capacity and weight. We will end this unit by exploring telling time and elapsed time. Please continue to practice those multiplication facts nightly.
In science, we have started our unit on plants. We have planted seeds and we will watch them grow. We will discuss the different parts of plants and how each part of the plant contributes to its’ survival. We will also discuss photosynthesis and the importance of rich soil.
